Auto thieves are hitting this area
Motorists in this area are advised to keep closer watch on their vehicles after a recent rash of car thefts in central Wisconsin, including two in Abbotsford.
An 18-year-old Wausau man is in custody in Merrill afer being caught with a car stolen Dec.

That theft may be part of a larger pattern of thefts and burglaries in the area.

The auto was spotted in Merrill at 12:30 a.m. Dec. 28. A Merrill Police Dept. officer gave chase, and shortly thereafter, three Asian males fled from the car, according to a report received by the Colby-Abbotsford Police Dept. One of them was apprehended and arrested, and he is being held in Lincoln County Jail on a $500 cash bond.
On Dec. 23, local police were notified that a 1988 Dodge Caravan was stuck in the south ditch on Pine Street, and had been there since the previous night. Investigation showed the vehicle had been stolen from Merrill on Dec. 11.
That same night, another van was stolen in Abbotsford.
