1991 police budget proposed

The Colby-Abbotsford Police Commission will soon discuss a 1991 police department budget which is 3.3% higher than this year, and will also discuss Chief Ron Gosse’s annual request for a sixth officer to alleviate the investigative overload in his department.

The proposed budget figures were scanned by Abbotsford aldermen at their Sept. 10 meeting, but no action was taken. The police commission will discuss the budget at its Oct. 3 meeting and make a recommendation to both council.

Gosse’s proposal for the five-man department calls for expenditures of $194,455 in the coming year. That includes $130,110 in wages (base, longevity, sick leave, on call, night shift, overtime, holiday pay and secretary wages), plus $14,640 for health insurance and $16,000 for retirement.

Auto maintenance and fuel will cost $9,000, social security and workmen’s comp another $13,750, phone expenses $2,150 and clothing allowance $2,100. Six thousand dollars will be set aside for future purchase of a patrol car.

Gosse also turned in a budget which would include the hiring of a sixth officer midway through the year. With that person working for only half the year, the total budget was estimated at $205,423, but in 1992, with the added person working the whole year, the expenses would be correspondingly higher.

Since a fifth man was hired, the chief said, complaints have increased by 39%. He invited aldermen to take a look at the records.

Nikolay carries locally

Interest was high in this area in the Democratic primary election Tuesday, with many areas voting heavily on the party ticket in what is normally a predominantly Republican area.

Much of the interest was undoubtedly due to the race of local attorney Frank Nikolay, who was running for lieutenant governor, finishing behind Martin Schreiber.

Nikolay, who is also a Clark County assemblyman, handily outpolled his opponents in all local precincts.

Enrollment 771 at Abbotsford Schools A total of 771 students have enrolled in the Abbotsford public schools.

High school enrollment is 219 in the four grades. There are 53 in the freshmen class, 68 sophomores, 51 juniors and 47 in the senior class.

In the elementary schools, the eighth grade is the largest with 69 enrolled. There are 66 in the seventh grade, 60 in sixth grade, 59 in fifth grade, 63 in fourth, 44 in third, 58 in second and 60 in the first grade. Sixty-six have enrolled in kindergarten, and there are seven special education children.

Enrollment at St. Louis School

A total of 147 students have enrolled at the St. Louis Catholic school at Dorchester when classes started last week. The faculty was announced in an article Aug. 20. A system of departmental teaching is used at the school.
