Friends of the CCL hosts “Cansgiving” Food Sculpture 2024

In 2018, the Friends of the Colby Community Library (CCL) hosted “Cansgiving” with food sculpture displays in the CCL’s Community Room. Donations to the food pantries in Colby and Unity were 2,090 items. In 2020, COVID-19 shutdowns found businesses creating “Foodsgiving” food displays in their own spaces and submitting photos for people to vote on their favorites. The food pantries were gifted with 3,615 food items. In 2022, “Foodstruction” displays were back at the library, and 2,012 food items were donated. “FoodSculpture 2024” invites any business, civic group, school class, church group, and individual or family to purchase (or collect) and construct a sculpture from non-perishable food items at the Colby Community Library between November 1 and November 8. The contest is not limited to canned goods; all types of nonperishable food in boxes, bags, bottles, etc. may be used in addition to cans. Also, personal hygiene products and paper goods are welcome. Do not use food that is expired.
Entry forms are due at the Colby Community Library by Monday, October 21. The public is encouraged to vote for their favorite sculpture by visiting the Colby Community Library in person to view the displays between November 11-20.
Starting Monday, Nov. 25, the displays will be dismantled and food transported to the CUP Food Pantry in Colby and the Trinity Food Pantry in Unity.
CCL Director Vicky Calmes stated, “We hope the builders from previous builds return to participate again this year in our ‘FoodSculpture’ contest. The sculptures were so creative over the years. New builders are invited to participate in this fun event, which provides food to local families. We look forward to seeing the creativity and generosity of our community in the displays, and the public enjoying viewing and voting.”
