April showers bring May fun at CCL

The Colby Community Library (CCL) is offering a variety of opportunities for the community in May. Stop in the library to see what is happening for youth and adults.

The Colby Community Library was selected to collaborate with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue to encourage Wisconsin state park visits. The CCL will provide a free one-day, one-time use park sticker to library users. Stop by the library in May to pick up your free pass. Please note that you must know the day you will be visiting one of the Wisconsin parks requiring passes—the pass will be dated and will only be valid that day. The number of passes is limited and will be awarded on first come, first served basis. Limit one per family until passes are gone.

Free “Take and Make” crafts for May include garden-themed kits suitable for honoring mom on Mother’s Day.

Books and Movies Wanted

Forward Bank is collecting books, movies, and puzzles for the Cheese Days Book and Movie Sale. Bring clean, salable items to Forward Bank during regular business hours through July 1. No VHS, magazines, or Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, please. Do not bring moldy, torn, water damaged, or musty books. Also, before donating items from garage sales, price tags need to be removed.

Book Club

The evening book club at the CCL will meet Tuesday, May 16 at 6 p.m. to discuss Laura Dave’s book “The Last Thing He Told Me.” Kimberly Hanson is the discussion leader. Members will decide on a year-end gathering location and date and rank the books read throughout the year.

Craft and Hobby

Friday, May 19 will be the last Craft and Hobby evening for the 2022-2023 session. Doors open at 4 p.m. Craft and Hobby will resume in August on the third Friday evening of each month.

“All Together Now: Color Your World” is the summer reading program theme for 2023. Watch for information on the Colby Community Library website and Facebook page. Brochures will be available mid-May at the library. The program is for youth ages 3-12; there is also a teen program for ages 13-19. Registration runs June 1 through June 10. For those under the age of 3, the CCL offers the 1000-4000 Books Before Kindergarten program year-round.

Students grades Pre-K through fifth grade at Colby Elementary and kindergarten through grade 8 from St. Mary’s will be previewing the program during the week of May 23. If there are any other area schools interested, please contact the library to make arrangements.

Maddie Day/MADD

People with big hearts, once again, made the CCL’s Service Project for 2023 a huge success. The Marshfield Medical Center received 1005 handcrafted items for youth patients from the Maddie Thums Memorial Sew-a-thon. The Make-A-Difference Day (MADD) event produced 103 items for the CCL’s outreach programs. Over 40 people helped with the service projects, which donated 1108 total items to the community.

NLW

National Library Week (NLW) found 147 patrons winning a variety of garden-themed prizes to celebrate the CCL. Since 1879, there has been a library in Colby, making it one of the oldest libraries in the state of Wisconsin with 144 years of continuous service.

The CCL will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 29. Beginning in June, the CCL will be open for summer hours, which will add Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon, for patron convenience.
