CCL to host tenth annual Sew-A-Thon

Mark your calendars to help with the tenth annual Maddie Thums Memorial Sew-a-Thon and the Colby Community Library’s (CCL’s) Make-A-Difference Day (MADD). Plan to attend the events on Saturday, March 4 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Colby Community Library. In case of inclement weather, the sew-a-thon will be held March 11 from 9-5.
To celebrate ten years of the service project day, ten projects have been selected for participants to create. The Marshfield Medical Center will receive items sewn for the Birth Center and Pediatrics Department. This year, the projects are ice pack covers, diaper station changing pads, mini hospital gowns for procedure dolls, developmental hearts, freeze pop covers, and knit or crocheted graduation hats for NICU babies. Items for the CCL’s Make-A-Difference Day will be burp cloths, reversible bibs, cloth books, and pillowcases for health care workers.
Sewing, knitting, and crocheting will begin March 4 at 9 a.m. Please bring sewing machines and notions, or crochet hooks or knitting needles if you have them. There will be tasks for people wishing to clip, turn, and press items, too. Nearly 1000 items have been cut and are ready to sew.
If there is fabric left, it will be bagged with the patterns for people to pick up and take home to finish. The items should be returned by Friday, March 31 so the items can be delivered during National Library Week in April.
Through the years, volunteers have created and donated thousands of handmade projects to the medical facilities in Marshfield in memory of Maddie. This year, financial sponsors are Creative Hideaway of Dorchester and Thrivent Action Teams.
A soup, sandwich, and salad luncheon will be served at noon to all participants. Plan to visit to share a day of camaraderie with other service-minded community members. Please RSVP to the library at 715-223-2000 if you are attending so we can plan for food and space required.
“Although she is no longer with us, ‘Maddie Day’ helps us remember all the good she did for everyone as a registered nurse and a library volunteer. The CCL has always been fortunate to have dedicated volunteers who give back to the community. We hope to see dozens of helpers on March 4 at the CCL,” stated Vicky Calmes, Colby Community Library Director.
