Unity American Legion
The Otto H. Kops American Legion Post 358 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 358, Unity, held their annual Veterans Appreciation Dinner on Nov. 11 at the American Legion building. Attending were 49 veterans, spouses and guests.
Adjutant Richard Strathmann gave the welcome and introduced the post and unit officers, along with the Badger Boys State and the Badger Girls State delegates and their parents.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Cub Scouts Pack 387 of Spencer. The invocation was read by Service Officer Dulcie Lilly.
First Vice Commander Don Lilly read the POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony, pointing out a place setting on a small table in a place of honor, symbolizing members of the profession of arms missing from the group’s midst. They will be remembered until they come home.
A moment of silence was held for the veterans who passed away this year.
Following the dinner, Badger Girls State delegate Abbie Hediger, daughter of Dave and Stephanie Hediger, Colby addressed the assembly about her week at UW-Oshkosh this past summer. Abbie was elected mayor of the City of Birch. A certificate of appreciation was presented to her by Unit President Judee Krueger.
Badger Boys State delegate Roman Schmitt, son of Terry and Jean Schmitt, Colby, spoke about his week at Ripon College. A certificate of appreciation was presented to him by Post Adjutant Strathmann. These programs enable high school students to develop political and leadership skills.
The benediction was read by Unit President Judee Krueger. The colors were retired.
