In regards to the long article that was in last week’s paper in regards to the Veterans Office, I was saddened by the information. That one meeting/article does not give the whole story.

I was raised in a family that didn’t have veterans or active duty members that I spent any time with. I had no idea what it was like to be a part of a military family till I married a Marine and my eyes were opened WIDE. A military family is like no other! It is a feeling that you will never understand unless you have been around a strong military family, it is absolutely an amazing feeling knowing that your family was selfless enough to fight for our country. I am very fortunate and proud to be married into a strong military family. This is why I am flabbergasted and angered by what is happening to our local Veterans Office.

I have worked closely both professional and personally with the Taylor County Veterans office. I have worked with Jeff Hein; the former Chief Veterans Service Officer, (CVSO) and Shellie Shaw the current CVSO. I know that from personal experience they both are two of the best people that I have ever met. I have volunteered my time to the Veterans Office and it was a wonderful experience. Shellie Shaw is so genuine, I did not realize that people like her still were out there in the world let alone giving so much of herself to that office. When you talk to Shellie she listens, truly listens. So when she states that she gives all her attention to the person that she is with, she does! She makes you feel like you are her only priority. Nikki Sherman (Veterans Benefit Specialist) and Shellie Shaw make everyone that enters that office feel like they matter, they are such caring individuals. Their quality of service to the Veterans and the general public is being questioned, really?

In regards to the door being locked I have been to that office many times and I have had difficulties opening the door. The door knob is hard to open making it seem like it is locked. I have mentioned it to maintenance staff at the court house and they stated that they are not able to change the door knob since it is a historical building leaving the Veterans office little options on getting a door knob that opens easier.

This is near and dear to my heart and I truly believe there are deeper issues that are going on in the Taylor County Courthouse that do not stem from the Veteran’s office. Please start asking questions, people of Taylor County need to get the full story and the truth!

Barb Krug of Krug’s Bus Service spoke to the Pre-K3 graders about bus safety. The students learned about emergency procedures, how to sit correctly on the bus, what to do and what not to do on the bus. Krug showed them the exterior of the bus and that the ‘Danger Zone’ means to not stand close to the outside of the bus. She also showed them what the lights do and what they all mean. The students were very excited to learn about the bus.
