Cooler temperatures, unpredictable weather and heavy gear, can turn an enjoyable hunt into a dangerous situation, if safety isn’t a top priority. The following safety tips are recommended for hunters using boats this season: • Always wear a life jacket. One of the most critical safety measures is wearing a life jacket. As water temperatures drop, the risk of hypothermia increases significantly. Life jackets keep a person afloat and conserve energy, allowing them to stay warm and increase the chances of survival. • Avoid overloading the boat. Too much weight can make the boat unstable and prone to capsizing. Account for all passengers, hunting dogs and gear placement. Keep gear stowed low and centered, to prevent capsizing. • Check the weather. Fog, wind and sudden storms can create hazardous conditions. Check forecasts before launching. • Transport firearms safely. When transporting firearms by boat, ensure they are unloaded and secured, so they won’t go overboard. • See and be seen. Ensure the boat has proper lighting, especially during low-light conditions. Visibility is key to avoiding collisions and navigating safely. • Inform someone of plans. Share the hunting plan with someone on land, including the expected return time and location.
