Marathon boys take second at Smiley Invite


Marathon’s varsity boys cross country team was ranked No. 1 in Division 3 going into Saturday’s 68th annual Bill Smiley Invitational at Wausau East High School. Marathon took second place in the Division 2/3 race to champion Prentice/Rib Lake, which then promplty overtook the Red Raiders for the top spot in this week’s Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association Division 3 rankings.
Marawood Conference boys cross country teams dominate the top of the Division 3 poll this week with Prentice/Rib Lake No. 1 followed by Marathon at No. 2 and Phillips No. 3.
Marathon junior Logan Peters was the highest local boys finisher in the Bill Smiley Invitational’s Division 2/3 race. He took sixth place in 16 minutes, 44.3 seconds. Edgar senior Cade Koch took 10th place in 17:08 to guide the Wildcats to a 13th place team finish among 24 teams competing in the Division 2/3 race. Edgar senior Dillan Sondelski placed 14th in 17:26.2.
Red Raiders junior Brady Annis took 16th place in 17:38.7. Athens sophomore Ben Hartwig placed 19th in 17:37.5 for the Bluejays which didn’t have a complete team to score points. Marathon senior Gavin Mattiae took 23rd place in 17:55.8. Red Raiders junior Matthew Kindlarski placed 34th in 18:12 and sophomore Kyle Sulzer was 68th in 19:00.6.
Athens senior Eli Paul placed 85th in 19:28.7 and Marathon freshman Aiden Blake was 86th in 19:30.1. Marathon freshman Joshua Baeseman took 105th place in 20:04.4. Edgar freshman Aidan Sondelski placed 108th in 20:05.8, sophomore Parker Albrecht was 120th in 20:23.3, junior Isaac Socha 131st in 20:48.3, sophomore Finn Olmstead 155th in 21:46.6, freshman Lucas Socha 165th in 22:11.8 and freshman Kodi Werner 172nd in 22:45.4.
Girls results
Athens junior Ellis Baer was the highest local girls finisher at Saturday’s Bill Smiley Invite. She took 10th place in 20:36.1. The Bluejays didn’t have a complete team to score points. The Edgar girls team placed 17th and Marathon was 20th.
Edgar freshman CeCe Mills took 39th place in 22:17.8 and sophomore Ashley Krause was 53rd in 22:40.6. Marathon sophomore Berta Bota placed 91st in 24:05. Wildcats sophomore Adeline Peterson took 101st place in 24:36.1, Red Raiders senior Mya Yach was 105th in 24:47.4, Wildcats sophomore McKenzie Mueller was 110th in 25:04.2 and junior Jora Knetter was 121st in 25:27.6.
Red Raiders sophomore Sophia Bowe took 135th place in 25:59.5, Edgar senior Samantha Schmidt was 138th in 26:22.8, Edgar sophomore Paige Reinders 145th in 26:57.9, Marathon senior Lindsay Putnam 153rd in 27:42.6, Edgar senior Rachel Burke 154th in 27:44.2 and Marathon junior Kayla Cihlar 157th in 28:00.4.
