Stratford Schools to Open Doors

Stratford public schools will begin its new school term with inservice days on August 20 and 21 for all faculty members. Students in grades K-12 will begin school on Friday, August 22 at approximately 8:15. It will be a full day of school for all students.

Fireman of the Year at Marathon

The Marathon Fire Department has chosen Maynard Jahnke as the local winner in the Fire Fighter of the Year program. Local winners and chiefs will be honored September 8 and 9 at the Milwaukee Brewers-Baltimore Oriole baseball game at County Stadium.

Lightning Kills Livestock

Saturday night’s severe electrical storm was a disaster to three local farmers. They lost a total of 17 animals due to lightning. Norman Kaiser had seven cows instantly killed and one later, Jim Kaiser lost one cow and Sylvester Wilhelm lost eight head. All three farmers had insurance. STRAFORD JOURNAL

Village evacuated

Part of the Village of Stratford was evacuated last Wednesday when a contractor struck a two-inch gas main on the corner of North and Third Avenue. The main was hit during underground boring and could not be turned off immediately, requiring the evacuation. The gas was turned off at the valve, affecting 231 customers. Residents were evacuated for approximately 2 ½ to three hours.

VFW auxiliary makes plans

The Ladies Auxiliary to Stratford Memorial Post 6352 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars met at the clubhouse. President Rita Wiesman presided. The fall district meeting will be held in September at Adams-Friendship. Hostesses were Lois TeStrake and Sue Schiferl. Winner in the drawing was Elaine Becher.
