Protecting the most vulnerable residents
The Taylor County Health Department will continue to offer free childhood lead testing through the end of July for all Taylor County families. With the financial support from Aspirus Medford and the Taking Action with Data grant*, the local health department has been able to connect residents with this free service throughout the summer.
“Kids love to put things in their mouths,” explains Melissa Moore, Public Health Foundationalist with the Taylor County Health Department. “Whether they’re exposed to through paint, dirt, water, toys or other items, it takes less than five grams of lead dust, roughly the size of a sugar packet, to poison a child.”
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) recommends blood lead testing for all children ages 1 and 2, and any children between 3-5 years old that have never been tested. A quick blood test is the only way to know if your child has been exposed to lead, which can result in a variety of serious health problems and learning difficulties – including developmental delays, hearing/speech problems, inability to pay attention, plus other serious illnesses or death - especially for children under 6 years old.
“Whether you’re a homeowner, renter, landlord, or renovator,” continues Moore, “we can all take steps to reduce exposure to dangerous lead dust.”
Lead testing is by appointment only. To schedule, for additional information, or for program eligibility questions, call 715748-1400.
