Barn razed by blaze

A 36-foot by 110-foot dairy barn on the farm of George Lenhard, Route 3, Athens was destroyed by fire Monday morning. Kenneth, the son of the owner, was in the straw mow putting down straw when the fire broke out. He was overcome by smoke and heat and was transported to the hospital.

Street Garden

Bobby Calmes, 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Calmes, Marathon, lives on Main Street without much of a place to plant a garden. The youngster planted his little garden between the sidewalk and the corner of his building. He has a pumpkin vine crawling down the steps.

Schnappsville powers to win

Schnappsville, behind home runs by Bill Yessa and Ray Chojnowski, buried the Scrubs in Edgar mixed couples slo-pitch action 15-4. The league plays on Sunday evenings.

Cassel residents oppose feed mill

Town of Cassel residents mounted a strong opposition at a public meeting against the construction of a new feed mill by Marathon Feed Inc. Owner Dale Heise said the present feed mill located in the village of Marathon was built in the early 1900s and because of village growth, it has made it virtually impossible for Heise to expand or rebuild. The mill is set to be built on a parcel of Lyle Lemmer land along 107 north of CTH N.

Missionaries to Nicaragua

Tracy and Rachel Helms were featured speakers at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rachel, the granddaughter of Doris Habeck, Athens, is a nurse and assisted at several of the clinics during the couples stay in Nicaragua. The couple presented a hand decorated cross to the Athens Trinity Church.
