Rib Lake residents can look forward to a modest rate increase on their sewer bills in 2012 as a result of action taken by the Rib Lake Village Board on September 26. Trustee Bob Carpenter stated that his committee was recommending a three percent increase in the rate starting with the first quarter of 2013, and another three percent increase in 2014. “And if we did that sewer bills for residents would go up probably less than a dollar a month. That’s a very reasonable cost,” said Carpenter. The village board approved the recommended rate increase.

A miraculous escape from injury and possible death was experienced Sunday afternoon by Warren Brown and Edward Pottick, both of New York state, when their BT 13 airplane crashed in the woods on the Emil Viegut farm directly north of the port. Neither of the young men received a scratch, but both confessed they considered themselves mighty lucky. Brown, pilot and owner of the plane, who resides in Lebanon, N.Y., explained that he and Pottick, whose home is in Long Island, N.Y., had flown to Medford Friday from Minneapolis to visit Fred Strombom.

The Smith general store at Hannibal was broken into Saturday night by unknown parties, and a fairly large haul made. Watches, jack knives, and rings were the only items of merchandise disturbed. The estimate of the value of the articles stolen is between $250 and $300. Mr. Smith has no clue to the identity of the burglars, but from the nature of the articles taken it is presumed to have been the work of home talent rather than outside professionals.

At the hour of midnight last Saturday, the several whistles and other apparatus for producing noise, sounded a lusty alarm of fire, and aroused the population of the city from its peaceful slumbers. The cause of the alarm was a fire in an old building on the north side of the Perkins grist mill, which had evidently originated in an incendiary manner. The fire department responded to the call as well as nearly all the men attending the dance at Germania hall, and the fire was easily confined to the one small building.
