Medford woman killed in Hwy 29 crash

Jen Krug, 38, of Medford was among three people who were killed in a two-vehicle crash on Hwy 29 Saturday night.

According to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office the crash occurred at about 11:20 p.m. on Hwy 29 in the town of Frankfort, Marathon County. The crash scene was about one mile west of the intersection with Hwy 97.

When deputies arrived on the scene three individuals were deceased and there were no surviving occupants from either vehicle.

According to law enforcement, Krug was operating one of the vehicles. The driver of the second vehicle was Sophie K. Sullivan, 21, of the Appleton area and her passenger was Audrie R. Stephens also of the Appleton area.

Sullivan and Stephens were best friends and roommates who were driving home from Minneapolis when the crash occurred. According to law enforcement, Krug was driving on the wrong side of the divided highway without her lights at the time of the crash.

A motorist who had stopped and left his vehicle in an attempt to render assistance was struck by a vehicle traveling past the scene. The male pedestrian was transported to the hospital with injuries described as being non-life threatening. The name of this motorist has not been released.

Assisting the Marathon County Sheriff’s deputies were police from Edgar, Marathon City and Athens, personnel from the Marathon county medical examiner’s office, the Marathon County Highway department and the Athens Fire Department.

The crash is under investigation with law enforcement noting the crash occurred at night in an unlighted section of highway.
