10 Years Ago – 2010
Scott Bowe, DNR conservation warden for Chippewa County, is chosen as the 15th annual recipient of the Pat Bannister Memorial Award, from the Lake Holcombe Improvement Association. Bowe was selected for his contributions toward the betterment of the Holcombe Flowage.
20 Years Ago – 2000
The Bob and Thelma Josifek, and Ronald and Evelyn Nelson farms, in Cadott, are honored as century homes at the Wisconsin State Fair. The Josifek farm is second generation affair, while the Nelson farm has seen three generations on its land.
30 Years Ago – 1990 The Cornell Senior Citizens Club celebrates their 20th anniversary, after Keystone resident Peter Krostag held the first meeting that started the group. Although Krostag moved from the area, he returned for the special occasion.
40 Years Ago – 1980
John Kysilko, Jim Falls, is noted for his abundant and colorful flowers, including 12-inch diameter dahlias, but his green thumb can also raise gigantic tomatoes. One such specimen weighed 1 3/4 pounds and was 16 1/2 inches in circumference.
50 Years Ago – 1970
Cornell is to have the state’s only single-span, tied-arch bridge, which will be constructed just north of the existing bridge on State Hwy. 64. To fit in with its environment and be pleasing to the eye, the structure will be painted blue in the $1.23 million project.
60 Years Ago – 1960
After a long history, which includes the record as one of the first established in the area, the Edson Cheese Factory, closes its doors. Owner Gordon Blazel stopped production, because of increased operation costs.
100 Years Ago – 1920
Henry Scammont, one of Keystone’s hustling farmers, brings in some of his fresh apple crop to market. After tasting said fruits, residents quickly agreed Scammont’s apples are the finest of the season.
