Memorial Day services scaled back
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in area veteran posts cancelling or changing their Memorial Day services.
All Memorial Day services in Medford and Jump River have been cancelled.
Western Taylor County American Legion Post 359 and Bellinger-Lublin-Gilman VFW Post 6186 will hold services at Donald Cemetery at 9 a.m., Huron Russian Orthodox Cemetery at 9:45 a.m., Huron Presbyterian Cemetery at 9:55 a.m., Huron Catholic Cemetery at 10:05 a.m., Huron Lutheran Cemetery at 10:20 a.m. and Meadowbrook Cemetery in Gilman at 11 a.m.
In Lublin, commander Steven Christophersen wrote to say, “Due to the current health crisis disrupting day-to-day business in our communities, our normal Memorial Day ceremonies held at local cemeteries will be different this year. We are still conducting them, only on a more private and solemn basis. This is so that we do not assemble large crowds and increase the chance of spreading illness. Our timing at the cemeteries may even change to facilitate this. But as we will still be honoring our fallen veterans, we also encourage everyone else to pay respect to the veterans no longer with us. Thank you to everyone for continuing to support the American Legion and veterans in our communities.”
The American Legion post in Rib Lake will hold services at St. Peter, St. Ann’s and Lakeview cemeteries, as well as at the pier in Rib Lake. There will be no parade or service at Veterans Park on McComb Avenue.
