Cornell After-School kids get to cuddle baby bears, as DNR biologist Mike Gappa sedates the mother bear in a nearby den. The four cubs were tucked inside coats to stay warm while the DNR collected weight, blood and tooth samples.
20 Years Ago – 2000
Andrea Boettcher, Cadott, is one of the athletes on the Special Olympics of Wisconsin cross country team, headed for Anchorage, Alaska, to compete at the Special Olympics Winter World Pre-Games.
30 Years Ago – 1990
Arlene Jiskra, Holcombe, still boasts a green Christmas tree, well past Valentine’s Day, sitting in front of her big picture window. The tree has new growth sprouts coming out of the trunk, the second time this has happened to Jiskra.
40 Years Ago – 1980
The Cadott High School Girls Athletic Association (GAA) purchases 24 pairs of secondhand ice skates, with the intention of sharpening the blades, replacing laces and patching the shoes. GAA adviser Emma Jane Luebstorf says the skates will be available for use by school age children.
50 Years Ago – 1970
Alex and Evelyn Gwidt sell the Cornell Drug and Gift Shoppe, after 21 years in business, to retire in Mesa, Ariz.
60 Years Ago – 1960
Julius Gehrke moves his popular Coffee Cup Cafe on the Cunningham Block of Cadott’s Main Street, to the corner of Main and State Hwy. 29. While some loyal customers followed the cafe to its new location, others have made do with the fountain at the drug store or purchased a coffee maker, while still others have “sucked it up” and gone without their daily coffee breaks.
100 Years Ago – 1920
Cornell is snowbound, after the worst blizzard early settlers have seen in 25 years, hits the area, leaving impassable drifts across the highway and railroad tracks. Those who ventured out after the storm, were seen skiing their way into work.
