By Pastor Mark Williams Faith Baptist Church • Cornell While shepherds watched their flocks by night, the ultimate Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ, was born in nearby Bethlehem. So important was this event, that the shepherds put their earthly priority (shepherding) on hold, so they could go to Bethlehem to look for the Messiah-Savior.

At that moment, the shepherds themselves became sheep – and now they were seeking their own Shepherd. Is Jesus your Shepherd this Christmas season?

The answer to this question does not depend on if you attend church or hold to a certain belief system; rather, it depends on whether or not you hear your Shepherd’s voice, and follow Him.

Jesus portrayed Himself as the Good Shepherd in this way: “The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.” ( John 10:3-4 ESV).

Are you a sheep of Jesus’ fold? Do you follow Him? Or are you like the religious people of Jesus’ day – people who followed certain religious ritual and were connected to certain religious organizations, but people who were not followers of the Shepherd?

The invitation is open! Come to the Shepherd. Jesus affirmed that, “All that the Father gives me will come to Me and whoever comes to Me, I will never cast out.” ( John 6:37 ESV).

Jesus also said, “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in Him, should have eternal life.” ( John 6:40 ESV).

Have you sought for and found the Shepherd? Do you keep your eyes on Him and follow Him? The true sheep of the Good Shepherd are those who have forsaken the sheep-folds of this world, to become part of Jesus’ flock. If you’re not a follower of the Good Shepherd, won’t you come to Him today?

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” ( John 1:12 ESV).
