On June 15, 23 Lions Club Members, friends and family from the 5 Lions Clubs in Taylor County visited the Wisconsin Lions Camp and the Wisconsin Lions Foundation which is located in Portage County near Rosholt and Stevens Point.

The Lions Camp is approximately 440 acres that surrounds Lions Lake. Since 1956, Lions Camp has been dedicated to providing a quality camping experience for persons with disabilities. Their primary objective is to provide a fun, safe and memorable camping experience which will have a positive impact on the camper’s life.

Goals of the Camp: Build positive selfconcept, Promote independence, Social interaction opportunities, Growth in social skills, Develop outdoor recreational skills, and Learn self-advocacy.

Camp Experience: At Wisconsin Lions Camp, campers participate in a variety of activities to help develop lifelong skills, including independence, teamwork, resiliency and a sense of purpose. Camp encourages connection with nature builds self-esteem, nurtures friendships and promotes growth in a safe environment.

Activities include: Swimming, Mud Pit, Boating, Crafts, Performing Arts, Challenge Course, and Environmental Education.

Staff Overview: the Camp Director oversees a team of staff to ensure a safe and successful Camp experience. The team includes: Camp Administrative Assistant, Food Service Supervisor, Healthcare Supervisor, Program Supervisor, Counselors, Specialists, Food Service staff, Healthcare staff, Housekeeping staff. The Wisconsin Lions Foundation staff including the Facility Director and Maintenance Team are also part of the Camp Staff.

Five day summer camps are offered for: 1. Children ages 6-17 who are Blind or Visually Impaired, who have Epilepsy, or are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

2. Children ages 10-17 with Intellectual Disabilities or Autism.

3. Children ages 10-17 who have Diabetes.

4. Adults aged 18+ who are Blind or Visually Impaired, or Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

5. Adults ages 18-25 with Intellectual Disabilities or Autism.

Eligibility: Resident of Wisconsin, managed socially and behaviorally in a group of 1 staff and 6 campers; Independent in self-care skills; and meet specific requirements for each disability served.

The Wisconsin Lions Camp has meeting rooms, lodging facilities or programming facilities that are available for rent for businesses, conventions, organizations, or family events. They also offer camping and RV sites. General activities include archery, basketball, campfires, challenge course activities, cross country skiing, a brand new 18 post DISC GOLF course, hiking, mud pit, volleyball, snowshoeing, wagon rides and waterfront activities. The five Lions Clubs in Taylor County are in Gilman, Jump River, Medford, Rib Lake, and Whittlesey.
