Taylor County Educator of the Month

What do you teach?

I am a reading interventionist at the Rib Lake Elementary School. I get to work with small groups of students ranging from PreK through Grade 5 every day. Each group has specific reading skills that we are working to bolster and build a strong foundation in reading.

How long have you been an educator?

This is my 12th year teaching. I spent 2 ½ years at a charter school in the Twin Cities area, and this is my 10th year at Rib Lake.

Who was your favorite/best teacher when you were a student and why?

My favorite teacher was Ms. Kathleen Kennedy. Ms. K was my high school English teacher, and she was notorious for building meaningful relationships with everyone. She cared enough to dig into the hard and messy parts of our lives and keep us on track through high school. She taught me to see the good in everyone, not take myself so seriously, and see the symbolism hidden in good literature.

Why did you choose this profession?

Education has always been an important part of my family. Three of my four grandparents were educators in the public school system, and they helped instill a love for learning very early on in my life. I remember sitting at Grandpa Walt and Grandma Marge’s kitchen table learning how to multiply when I was in 1st or 2nd grade. I loved the excitement of learning something totally new and wanted to share that love of learning with others.

What inspires you as an educator?

I love seeing children’s lives changed by the work that we as educators do. I love seeing the smiles and enthusiasm that students share as they see how much they have grown on their Spring assessments. I love finding new techniques and strategies to help my students achieve their ‘Aha!’ moment faster and love reading.

What is your favorite memory as an educator?

While I love the time with my students, my favorite memories are the times spent around the lunch table swapping stories and laughing with my colleagues. Teaching can be stressful, and the camaraderie and care that the staff at RLES has for each other, each student, and our community make it a special place to be each day.
