Marathon Area Elementary School and Marathon Venture Academy held a January spelling bee to qualify for a regional spelling bee this month. Top spellers by grade are as follows: Fourth grade: Aspyn Rhein, Natalie Sonnentag, Braxton Kilty, Westin Kleist, Mykenna Wright, Max Lawrence and Ava Layman.

Fifth grade: Breanna Fitzgerald, Chanelle Ziegel, Adessah Arneson, Gianna Voigt, Raylyn Handrick and Alec Miller.

Sixth grade: Brooke Lang, Logan Peters, Katelyn Love and Ean Shuda.

Seventh grade: Reed McCain, Leah Dodson, Chris Marcell and Sydney Sturm.

Eighth grade: Danica Paszek, Logan Rohland, Levi Krautkramer and Madyson Shannon.

A regional spelling bee will be held virtually on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 17 and 18.

Marathon Public Schools reported zero cases of COVID-19 among its school population of 852 students and staff as of Feb. 5.

Seeds for spring

The Marathon city Branch Library and UW-Extension Marathon County will offer a free class about how to start seeds for spring planting.

This program will cover everything you will need to start vegetable and flower seeds indoors. Instructors will discuss things to consider when purchasing seed, containers, and growing media. The class will learn how to apply important techniques in the sowing and growing of seedlings, and how to successfully plant the seedlings outdoors.

The classes will be held on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 18, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

St. Anthony’s

St. Anthony’s Spirituality Center, Marathon City, will offer a retreat, “The Language of the Emotion,s’ on Saturday, Feb. 20, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. with Elizabeth Lewis as presenter. The retreat will be held at the retreat center but also over the Zoom computer platform.

The workshop will teach how to skillfully work with your own and other’s emotions with fluency and ease. The workshop experience will include discussion, visual journaling, writing, guided meditations and visualizations.

History chats

The Marathon County Historical Society will offer a new series of their popular “History Chats” virtual programs about Marathon County.

Past History Chats series focused first on schools of the county, and then hospitals and early medicine in the area. In February, they’re bringing the “People You Should Know” series to share information about important people in the rich history of Marathon County.

All History Chats programs will be broadcast live simultaneously via Zoom, the Historical Society’s Facebook page and its YouTube channel. If you can’t join them live for these 10-15 minute presentations, you can watch archived recordings anytime at the same places. The programs are all on Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

The schedule of “People You Should Know” is as follows:

_ Feb. 11: The Winninger Family: From Athens to Broadway

_ Feb. 18: John Ringle: Civil Servant and Brickmaker

_ Feb. 25: Helen Stephenson: Wausau’s First Policewoman These programs, which are a collaborative effort between the Historical Society and the Marathon County Public Library, are free to watch and open to all ages with no registration required. Need help using your computer, tablet, smartphone or e-reader?

Marathon County Public Library staff can provide assistance in a variety of areas, including basic computer skills, saving and moving digital files, using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.), social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), using the library’s online resources and more.

Due to precautions to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the library is temporarily halting one-on-one, face-to-face appointments. You can contact the library by other means:
