Marathon City Branch Public Library staff will host on Monday, Feb. 8, a lively virtual discussion of Jason Reynolds’ novel, “Long Way Down,” at 5:45 p.m. The discussion will be held on the GoToMeeting platform.

On campus

UW-Stout has named Joseph Sedivy, Marathon, a senior working towards a degree in Mathematics and computer science, on its dean’s list for the fall 2020 semester. The award is presented to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

UW-Madison has recognized Marathon students with academic honors for the fall semester of the 2020-2021 academic year. The students, their college and academic award are Nathanael Acker, College of Letters and Science, dean’s list; Sarah Fritz, College of Agricultural and Life Science, dean’s list; Shane Kahan, College of Engineering, dean’s honor list; Bailey Karlen, School of Business, dean’s list; Breanne Karlen, School of Business, dean’s list; Cameron Schilling, College of Letters and Science, dean’s list; Ann Seliger, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, dean’s list; Morgan Stieber, School of Human Ecology, dean’s honor list UW-Green Bay has announced the names of Marathon undergraduate students receiving semester honors for the fall 2020 semester. Students who earn a 4.0 grade point average, which represents all “A” grades, receive highest honors.

Honors are given to students earning 3.74 to 3.50 grade point averages. The students are Madigan Fuhrman, semester honors, and Mackenzie Longdo, semester highest honors.

Winona State University in Minnesota has announced that two Marathon students, Katrina Fredrickson and Brooke Balz, have been named to the fall semester 2020 bean’s list.

Kindness challenge

Marathon Area Elementary School and Marathon Venture Academy participated this week in the Great Kindness Challenge next week (Jan. 25-29). This is a week where schools, students, and communities around the world devote one week to performing as many acts of kindness as possible.

Dress up days for the week were Monday, super heroes; Tuesday, neon colors; Wednesday, kindness shirts; Thursday, sports attire; and Friday, pajama day.

Catholic Schools Week

St. Mary’s School, Marathon, will celebrate Catholic Schools Week (Monday, Feb. 1, through Friday, Feb. 5). While Monday and Friday are regular dress days, Tuesday will be class color day, Thursday will be crazy hat/hair day and Friday will be comfy dress day.

Class colors for Tuesday are 4K, Orange; 5K, turquoise and Yellow; grade one, blue; grade two, purple; grade three, black; grade four, red; grade five, gray; grade six, green; grade seven, black; and grade eight, red.

Little treasures

The Marathon County Public Library will offer an easy and colorful project for adults to make during the month of January. The project is a felt wall hanging that can either be sewn or glued together and makes for a fun, bright decoration. The library will provide the felt, ribbon and directions. Participants will need their own glue and sewing materials.

T hese kits are free and available for pickup without an appointment at the Marathon City Branch Public Library.

Snowflakes

The Marathon City Branch Public Library will offer a symmetrical snowflake kit geared for young children during the month of January.

These fun craft kits will have cotton swabs, blue circles, and instructions. With adult guidance, kids can learn what symmetry is, how it works, and then craft their own snowfl ake. The offering is free with all supplies provided while they last!
