On campus

Two Marathon students are among 3,600 prospective UWMilwaukee graduates who have been invited to attend commencement exercises rescheduled for Sunday, Oct. 10, in Milwaukee. They are Spencer Krautkramer, who will receive a bachelor’s degree in engineering, and MacKenzie Ringle, who has studied for a masters degree in public health.

UWM is the second largest university in the State of Wisconsin, with approximately 24,000 associate, graduate and undergraduate students.

Contest winners

St. Mary’s School, Marathon, has announced local winners in a Catholic Daughters of the America’s contest. The winners include Katie Annis, poetry, first place; Jeffrey Deininger, Computer Art, second place; Lily Gage, Essay, second place; Logan Gore, Essay, third place; Ben Hale, Poetry, third place; Anika Kolka, Art, second place; Velda Mechelke, Art, first place, Computer Art, first place and Essay, third place; Taelyn Rennie, Essay, first place; and Alyssa Sessions, Essay, first place.

Diocesan awards

St. Mary’s School, Marathon, has announced that staff members have received recognition from the Diocese of La Crosse. In addition to first grade teacher Valerie Kind being named Elementary Educator of the Year, education interventionist Kelly Hahn has been given the Diocesan Support Staff Award and school secretary Suzie Lang the Holy Family Award.

Grab and Go Crafts

Children during the week of June 22-27 can plant their own beans at home and watch them grow throughout the summer with supplies and instructions provided by the Marathon City Branch Public Library as well as some stories for budding green thumbs. Youngsters will be given a link to a video recording of “Jack and the Beanstalk” read by library staff.

Parents can pick up this Summer Library Program project kits at the library.

Can corral

The Scouts BSA Troop 458 of Marathon will place a can corral in the Marathon Municipal Building parking lot after a delay due to the pandemic. The troop asks aluminum cans or bottles be placed into the bags placed in the corral. For more information, contact Steve at 715-432-3518.
