Colby-Abbotsford Police

R eports n September 11 - An officer was dispatched to a Colby address for a welfare check. The officer was told the caller hadn’t seen their neighbor in two days and were worried about his health. The caller said the man’s car was still in the parking lot which was confirmed by the officer upon arrival. The caller said they had knocked on the man’s door but received no response.

The officer contacted the property manager and obtained a phone number for the man but could not reach him on numerous attempts. The officers went to the building and saw that both external windows were covered and could not be seen through. The officer attempted to unlock the door using the code for the master key but was unsuccessful as the man had changed the locks on the door.

Neither the landlord or neighbors had any information for possible family members for the man. The officer went outside and knocked on both exterior windows but did not receive an answer. A corner of the window screen was ripped and the window slid open when tried. The officer ripped away the screen and slid the window all the way open. After calling for the man and receiving no answer, the officers climbed inside and announced their presence.

The officers checked the open areas and saw that the front door was locked with a shovel wedged underneath to prevent it from opening. The officers pushed open the bedroom door and saw a man laying on a bed. The man was laying on his back, motionless and when the officer shined his light on him, his eyes opened. The man sat up and came over to the officers asking why they were there.

The officer told the man the reason for their presence and said they would be leaving as long as he was OK. The man said he was fine and the officers cleared from the scene.

n September 12 - An officer was parked at a local business and observed a vehicle traveling towards the officer’s position with no headlights on in hours of darkness. The officer conducted a traffic stop and made contact with a female driver. The officer notified the woman the reason for the traffic stop and she then turned her lights on.

The officer obtained her information and ran her through the Wisconsin Department of Justice system. The officer observed a “near hit” for a wanted person. The officer conducted a records check of the near hit person and it was found that the woman had bond or body warrants through Clark county for Contempt of Court, operating while suspended and speeding.

The officer returned to the woman and asked her if she had ever been pulled over by police before. She said she had not. After asking the woman a few other questions containing identifying information to which she denied, the woman apologized and said she had lived at a previous address the officer asked about. She said she lied to the officer because she was scared and said she had in fact been pulled over before.

The woman then told the officers she had lied to them about her name and said she would write it correctly. The woman was placed under arrest for her warrants and for obstructing an officer.

The woman was transported to Clark County Jail without incident.
