n June 12 - An officer was notified of a vehicle driving erratically in the city of Colby. The officer was given a video of the vehicle fishtailing around the corner and going onto the grass.
The officer checked the area and was unable to locate the vehicle. The officer then went to the address listed for the registered owner of the vehicle. The officer met with a woman who said her son had her vehicle and was with some friends.
The officer showed the woman the video and told her that this is what her son is doing with her vehicle. The officer explained the seriousness of the video. The woman was upset and called her son and told him to come home immediately. The officer waited for the woman’s son to arrive.
When the boy pulled in, the officer asked him what he was doing. The boy said he was with some friends. The officer asked him about the driving and showed him the video. The boy said it was his friend driving at that time and not him. The officer asked the boy for his friend’s name. The boy said his friend’s name and said he lived in Colby and was only about 15 or 16 years old. The officer informed the boy that he could issue his mother citations as well for allowing him to drive the vehicle knowing that he does not have a license. The boy said his mom did not know he took the vehicle today.
The boy said this is the first time he has driven in that area. The officer showed the boy another picture the officer had with the same vehicle that was taken a few weeks prior involving the same type of complaint. The boy said he meant this is the first time he was driving on that road today but someone else was driving the car in that prior incident.
The officer ran the boy through dispatch and was told he has an instructional permit. The officer issued the boy a citation for operating a motor vehicle without a designated driver. The officer told the boy that he would ask his friend if he was driving. He said if the friend denied driving the vehicle, he would issue citations for disorderly conduct with a motor vehicle to both him and his friend.
The officer then went to the friend’s house. The officer met with the boy’s mother who said her son was not home but would be later that night. The officer showed the woman the video and told her that is why he needed to speak with the boy. The officer had another officer follow up with the boy and planned to issue citations on his next working shift.
