The Looney Lutherans will present “Hold the Lutefisk, It’s Beginning to Smell a Lot Like Christmas” in a Sunday, Dec. 12, 1 p.m. performance at the Edgar Public School auditorium sponsored by the Edgar Fine Arts Association.

The Looney Lutherans, a trio of warm, witty women, helps audiences enjoy the spirit of the season. Segments include a Lutheran version of “Cowboy” wisdom, letters to Santa, and the unique game show “Christmas Tree Amazing Race Star Search.”

The Looney Lutherans music, comedy, and some help from the audience to share their age-old wisdom for living a long and lively life, the Lutheran way. Material is comedic and family friendly, and you don’t have to be Lutheran to be a fan.

Youth group

The St. John’s Catholic Church Youth Group will present a “Mom and Dad Day Out” on Saturday, Dec. 11, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is a day for children to play games, decorate cookies, watch a holiday movie and have fun while their parents are out and about. All children must be at least three years old and potty trained. Free will donations will be accepted.

Historical Society

Join the Marathon County Historical Society for a series of short, virtual chats in December about some of the great work they’ve done over the years Next year (2022) will mark the 70th anniversary of the Marathon County Historical Society and its efforts to collect, preserve, and keep alive the history of the people of Marathon County. All History Chats programs begin at 12:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live simultaneously via Zoom, the Historical Society’s Facebook page and its YouTube channel. (Click the “Attend” button on this page to view on YouTube.) If you can’t join them live, you can watch archived recordings anytime at the same places.

These programs, which are a collaborative effort between the Historical Society and the Marathon County Public Library, are free to watch and open to all ages, no registration required. Call the Historical Society at 715-842-5750 for more information.

The schedule of December chats includes: December 9: “The Story of LogJam” with Martina Kostreva. For several years in the 1980s and 1990s, LogJam was a major event for the community. Join us to learn the story of where the idea for LogJam started, what you could get up to, and what it meant to the community.

December 16: “The Early Years of the History Museum” with Erick Konop. The historical society in the 1960s and 1970s was dominated by the personality of director Ed Schoenberger and general efforts to develop colorful connections to the community and foster interest in local history.

December 23: “Before the Historical Society” with Ben Clark. In some ways, the formation of the Historical Society in 1952 was the culmination of decades of historical programs and events. Learn how Marathon County decided it had history and that someone ought to do something to preserve it.

December 30: “Looking Ahead to 2022” with Sheryl Del Conte. To get people into the New Year, the Historical Society’s Curator of Events, Sheryl Del Conte, joins to give a peak at what’s coming up in 2022 for the Marathon County Historical Society.

Food drive

Food service workers at Edgar Public Schools are conducting a food drive during the Christmas season. Needed items include cereal, Pop-Tarts, boxed or powdered milk, cake mixes, frosting and everyday pantry items. Donated items may be placed in a box by the Christmas tree in the school kitchen.

COVID dashboard

Edgar Public Schools reports two cases of COVID-19 among 568 staff and students as of Dec. 2. The school has had 41 coronavirus cases since the start of the school year.

Christmas program

St. Johns Catholic School, Edgar, will hold a Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. A social will follow in the church dining hall.

Holiday concerts

Edgar Public Schools has announced the date of upcoming holiday concerts on Thursday, Dec. 9. The middle school concert is set for 9 a.m. The grades K-2 concert is set for 12:45 p.m. and the grades 3-5 concert will take place at 1:45 p.m. The high school concert is slated for 7 p.m.

All concerts will take place in the Edgar Public School auditorium.

Christmas Masses

St. John’s Catholic Church and Holy Family Catholic Church have announced Christmas Masses. There will be Masses on Friday, Dec. 24, 4 p.m. at St. John’s and at 7 p.m. at Holy Family. There will be Christmas Day Masses (Dec. 25) 9 a.m. at St. John’s and 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family.

Santa in Fenwood

Santa Claus is coming to Fenwood on Saturday, Dec. 11. He will be available to visit with children at Illusions Bar from 1-3 p.m. for pictures and to receive a treat.

Senior events

St. Stephen ELCA will sponsor a senior Christmas party on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1-3 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be served. The event will be held in the church basement which is wheelchair accessible.

Toys for tots

The Holy Family Parish CCD program is collecting new, unwrapped toys to be donated to the Salvation Army of Marathon County for Christmas presents through Sunday, Dec. 12. Monetary donations will also be accepted.
