William “Bill” J. Mercier


William “Bill” J. Mercier, 88, Town of Colburn, Chippewa County, passed away peacefully, Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Aspirus Hospital in Stanley.
William was born Nov. 24, 1936, to William and Edna (Berseth) Mercier, in Stanley.
He grew up in the Town of Colburn, and attended the Pike Lake one-room school, and later attended and graduated from Cornell High School, in 1955.
Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army National Guard.
William was united in marriage to Karen E. Anders, Nov. 30, 1963, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Cornell. Following marriage, they lived and farmed in the Town of Colburn.
He also worked at the Jim Falls Dairy, did self employed custom harvesting, logging, worked for the Town of Colburn, owned a saw mill and later, worked at Klisiewicz farms, until his retirement.
Bill enjoyed making maple syrup, fishing trips to Canada, playing cribbage, going to the casino, and helping family and friends, with construction and general projects.
He is survived by his wife – Karen Mercier; children – Jane “Becky” Smith, John (Tracey) Mercier, Laura (Mark) Hobbick, Pat (Tracy) Mercier, Joe Mercier (Irene Cook) and Scott (Melanie) Mercier; 15 grandchildren – Alexandria, Ashton, Delani, Natasha, Rusty, Saraya, Dana, Vanessa, Robert, Jared, Makayla, Wyatt, Mariah, Katie and Megan; 16 great-grandchildren; son-in-law – Brian Pilgrim; sisters – Margaret “Peggy” Totsky, Yvonne Seidling and Sally Mercier-Beckfield; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter – Jean Pilgrim; and several brothers-in-law.
A celebration of life will be held from noon-4 p.m., Sunday, May 18, at the Delmar Town Hall in Boyd.
