Michael “Mike” Earl Thums
1950-2026
Michael “Mike” Earl Thums, age 75, of Westboro, passed away at Aspirus Care and Rehab on Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, under the care of Hope Hospice.
Funeral services for Michael will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, with Father Julian Druffner officiating. Visitation will take place at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Saturday, March 21, 2026 from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.
Mike was born in Medford on Oct. 16, 1950 to Earl and Violet (Franck) Thums. He attended Westboro schools and was a 1968 graduate of Medford High School. After high school, he completed machinist courses at NTC in Wausau.
Mike worked at Weather Shield Mfg. for many years. If you couldn’t get a hold of Mike, you could find him working in his garage, either on a transmission, an engine, or a chainsaw repair or sale. He worked as a bus driver at the Rib Lake School District and as a custodian for 15 years. If you ever attended a basketball game at the high school, you know you saw and heard Mike playing trombone with the pep band!
Mike was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Rib Lake, proudly singing in their choir.
A die hard Ford man, all the way down to his birthday suit, you could find Mike drag racing his 1970 Ford Torino at Rock Falls Raceway and participating in Merrill Ice Drags. People will say that someone they know had a heart of gold. If you knew Mike, you know it wasn’t just a saying. Always willing to help with anything, whether it be giving of his time or one of his many skills.
Mike is survived by his children, Chad (Deb) Thums, of Madison, Tim (Lisa) Reitz, of Jacobsville, Mich., Greg Thums, of Malta, N.Y., Chris Thums, of Westboro, Scott (Elizabeth) Thums, of Carpenter, Wyo., Dustin (Veronica) Thums, of Taylor, Texas, Tasha (Chris) Wicks, of Holcombe, Tabitha (Troy) Block, of Dorchester, and Butch (Shannon) Weigel, of Medford; brothers, Steve (Wendy) Thums, of Westboro, Rock (Donna) Thums, of Medford; sisters, Deb Waskowiak, of Kalispell, Mont., Merri (Larry) Faber of Medford, and Jodi (Kevin) Weiss of Westboro; grandchildren, Nick, Flora, Woodland, Amanda, Lucas, Ben, Ezra, Mackenzie, Monica, Devon, Dominick, Dylan, Shay, Tenley, and Camry; seven great-grandchildren; and many aunts; uncles; cousins; nieces; and nephews.
