Verlyn W. “Pokey” Pockrandt, age 92, Loyal, passed away at his home on Thursday, March 5, 2026. A private family burial was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2026, in the Loyal Cemetery.
Verlyn William Pockrandt was born on Dec. 8, 1933, in Loyal, to William H. and Martina A. (Haslow) Pockrandt. He was raised on the family farm in the town of Sherman, and received his education in Loyal, graduating from Loyal High School. After high school, Pokey worked on the farm until his marriage to Loretta M. Younker on Sept. 8, 1954, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Abbotsford. They resided on the family farm, and he began driving milk truck and later dump truck. Eventually, Pokey began hauling his own cattle, and later started Pockrandt Transportation, which he operated until his retirement in 2008. He remained on the farm until his death.
He had many interests, but especially loved mowing his lawn, going to the casino, traveling, bowling when he was younger, and he really enjoyed a good party.
Pokey is survived by three daughters: Donna Smith of Loyal, Debbie (Larry) Lucht of Loyal, and Diane (Richard) Gallatin of Marshfield; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Landwehr of Edgar; and nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta, on June 10, 2002; one daughter, Doreen J. Pockrandt, on Jan. 29, 1965; and one sister, Udine Boettcher.
