Bernadine M. “Bernie” Schmeiser

Bernadine M. “Bernie” Schmeiser, 85, of Medford, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026 at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau.

Bernie was born Dec. 26, 1940 in Medford to Henry and Evelyn (Lewandowski) Behling. She graduated from Medford High School in 1959. On May 28, 1960, she married Robert F. Schmeiser, a young man she had met at a fishing contest. Their family says she “lured” him in and won the best catch of the day! She and Bob farmed most of their lives while raising their children.

Bernie enjoyed bowling and played on many leagues over the years; snowmobiling; playing solitaire; drawing and doodling; annual vacations, including bus trips and cruises with family; and going out to eat, especially at her favorite place, Rocky’s Café in Medford.

Survivors include her children, Terry (Jennifer Aldinger) Schmeiser, of Medford, Ricky (Audra) Schmeiser, of Arpin, Kristi (Josh) Strama, of Medford; a sister, Shirley (Tom) Kurtzweil, of Stratford; sister-inlaw, Birdine Behling, of Medford; five grandchildren, Wayne Schmeiser, Cassie (Kendall) Kildow, Mikayla (Greg) Korth, Macie Schmeiser and Hailey Strama; and three great-grandchildren, Carson, Oaklyn and Cooper.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob on May 15, 2024; daughter, Vicki Schmeiser; and brother, Henry Behling.

A memorial mass will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, Jan, 24, 2026 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford with Fr. Patrick McConnell officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband and her daughter at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in the spring.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 12 p.m., Saturday at the church.
