Arnold H. Dassow, 94, of Medford, died Friday, June 2, 2023 at his home while under the care of his family and Hope Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 8 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Medford with the Rev. Ralph Shorey officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, Medford. Military honors will be provided by the Medford Area Military Honors Team.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, June 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Medford and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated and will be designated by the family at a later date.

Arnold was born Oct. 14, 1928 in Medford to Henry and Bertha (Barkow) Dassow. Arnold grew up in a German speaking home and so when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, he worked as a translator and was stationed in Germany. He served honorably from 1951-1952 during the Korean War.

On July 31, 1954 he married Luella Hardrath at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Unity. They resided in Medford where Arnold first worked for the Taylor County Highway Dept., then became self-employed in the logging industry. He helped family build homes, additions, and garages. Arnold was usually outside, specifically in the woods, where he enjoyed making firewood and the peace of being surrounded by nature. He also enjoyed deer hunting, ice fishing and the occasional casino trip.

In his final months, Arnold truly appreciated all the help he received from his family, neighbors, the nursing staff at Hope Hospice, and his friends at Meals on Wheels. He welcomed visitors and enjoyed chatting. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and being a jokester.

He is survived by six children, Daniel (Kim) Dassow, Melody Jacobs, Twila (Bob Hessefort) Clarkson, Lisa (John) Jalowitz, all of Medford, Michele (Doug) Steines of Marshfield, and Vicki Dassow of Medford; daughter-in-law, Jan Dassow of Medford; a sister, Darlene Drager of Medford; sister-in-law, Audrey Hardrath of Abbotsford; grandchildren, Justin, Jared, Carly, Casey, Curtis, April, Chad, Nick, Travis, Noah, Haley and Sabryn; great-grandchildren, Nova, Elliott, Jace, Bentley, Blake, Meadow, Lily, Zayden, Zaybel, Emma, and one on the way, due in August. He is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Luella; his son, Arnold Jr. “Arnie” siblings, Hilbert Sr., Alvin Sr., Harold Sr., Elaine Gumz, Henry Jr., Robert Sr., Clarence, Donald, Ralph, and Ardella Dohrwardt; and a grandson, Harley Dassow.
