James “Jim” Cornelius Verhulst, 78, Holcombe, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at the Clark County Care Center, from Lewy Bodies Dementia, where he received comforting care for the last six years.

Jim was born Dec. 9, 1943, to Lawrence and Hattie (Schuettke) Verhulst.

He grew up in Holcombe, farming on the family farm.

Jim graduated from Lake Holcombe High School in 1962, and continued his education, with a bachelor’s degree from UW-Stout in industrial education.

He moved back to Holcombe, after college, to teach industrial arts and drivers education at the Lake Holcombe High School. Shortly after, he would meet the love of his life, Carol Tarnowski, and they would be married Dec. 21, 1968.

Jim went on to work as a truss designer/plant manager for Wisconsin Truss in Cornell. He finished his career working with his son, at Superior Machine & Design in Holcombe.

His love of wood working turned out to be restoring a 1967 Owen’s wooden boat that he got to enjoy on Lake Superior. He enjoyed many other things with his family, including agate hunting, vintage Power Wagons, making maple syrup in the sugar bush, Merc snowmobiles, car shows, constellations/ shooting stars, John Deere tractors, flying, fishing, hunting and designing/building homes, including his own.

Jim shared many talents with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife – Carol Verhulst; daughter – Mikelle (Gary) Salzgeber; son – Jason (Tami) Verhulst; and five grandchildren – Mikali Hicke (Salzgeber), Zackari Salzgeber, Cameron Verhulst, Alyssa Verhulst and Matthew Verhulst.

He was preceded in death by parents – Lawrence and Hattie Verhulst; infant sister – Joyce Verhulst; and brothers – Neal Verhulst and Larry Verhulst.
