1933-2021

Richard Carl (“Dick”) Danen, beloved Husband, Father and Papa died peacefully on Oct. 20, 2021 at the ripe old age of 88.

Dick will be interred at the DFW National Cemetery with military honors on Nov. 18, 2021 at 2:30 p.m. Further, as one of Dick’s long time wishes, there will be a Celebration of Life at the Danen Residence.

Dick was born on Oct. 1, 1933 in Medford and was raised on a small dairy farm near Stetsonville with 7 brothers and sisters. He loved the outdoors but hated milking cows. Therefore, after graduating from Medford High School in 1951 he joined the U.S. Army. He served in Japan and Korea, and was discharged as a Sergeant in 1954. After graduating from Wisconsin State College in Eau Claire in 1959, he joined Employers Mutual of Wausau and worked two years as a claims adjuster/safety engineer on a large road construction project in Vietnam. In 1962, he joined AIU (now AIG) as an international claims adjuster. He married Jean Marie Kurth of Eau Claire that same year and they immediately moved overseas. They lived in Manila, Kuala Lumpur (where their children Jim and Kim were born), Bangkok, Beirut, and Caracas before moving to Richardson, TX in 1977. He retired from AIG in 1998.

Before and after retirement, Dick and Jean enjoyed traveling the world. Dick visited and explored over 100 countries on business and pleasure. He made friends wherever he went. Dick and Jean were members of Canyon Creek Country Club and were avid golfers. In addition to traveling and golf, Dick cherished his family and friends. He also loved hunting, hiking, and working on “projects” for family and friends. He especially enjoyed Fall trips to the family Hunting Shack in Wisconsin to cut firewood and then he returned in November for Deer Season. Dick or Papa (his “grandpa” nickname) loved his 4 grandchildren who he enjoyed spending time with – teaching them about life, taking them on hikes, and traveling to Estes Park, the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Akumal and many trips to Destin.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Edward; his brothers, Jerry and Patrick; and his sister Ardis.

Dick is survived by Jean, his loving wife of 59 years; his son, Jim Danen and daughter-in-law Lori; his daughter, Kim Meaders and son-in-law Kurt; and his four grandchildren, Matthew (and his wife Megan), Christina, Michael and Steven. Dick is also survived by his brothers, Tom and Steve; and sisters, Roberta and Marcia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Methodist Cancer Center, 2805 E. Pres. George Bush Turnpike, Richardson, TX 75082.
