Richard was born Jan. 9, 1930 to Arthur and Carrie (Nelson) Zimpel in Sheboygan. He grew up in northern Wisconsin, and enlisted in the United States Air Force. Richard married Melvah Sue Dusenberry of Denison, Texas.

After Richard’s honorable discharge from the Air Force, he went on to complete his education and receive a doctorate from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. Upon completing his doctoral, he was employed by the Utah State Board of Education and the Colorado State Board of Education. After retiring from the Colorado State Board of Education, Richard and Sue moved to Tijeras, N.M. In his retirement, Richard enjoyed making stained glass, fishing, wood carving and puttering with his antique John Deere tractors.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Janet (Scott) Oseid of Colorado Springs, Colo.; stepson, Charles Warren of Elephant Butte, N.M.; grandchildren, Chad (Maryann) Robertson, Cody (Leah) Warren, and Chase (Samantha) Warren; great-grandchildren, Diego and Blake Robertson; sister, Carol (Ronald) Kirkpatrick of Kernersville, N.C.; brothers, Delbert Zimpel of Bloomer, Harvey (Laura) Zimpel of Abilene, Texas; sister-in-law, Donnell Zimpel of Manford, Okla. He is further survived by many other family and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Carrie Zimpel; his wife, Sue; and his brother, Gerald Zimpel.

Richard A. Zimpel, 90, of Albuquerque, N.M. passed away Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020, at the New Mexico State Veterans Home. Cremation rites have been accorded and private family services will take place at a later date.
