Cadott topped by Macks, Ramblers in road games

The Cadott Hornets looked to improve their conference record this week on the road, but the boys basketball squad couldn’t pull out a win against two tough teams.

Jan. 21 vs. McDonell conference (L 72-52)

In an away match-up with McDonell, the Hornets were only down four at halftime, but the Macks pulled away in the second, handing Cadott a 72-52 loss.

“[The] first half was strong, but foul trouble hurt us early in the first half,” said coach Dusty Burish. “Then, second half, we had a hard time beating the box.”

Senior Mason Poehls led the Hornets with 17 points, followed by junior Brad Irwin, who notched 11 points. Seniors Ben Steffes and Mitch Drilling each scored 6 points, as did freshman Eddie Mittermeyer. Rounding things out, freshman Tegan Ritter added 4 points, while junior Andy Falkenberg came in with 2 points.

“[We] still have some things to clean up, but hopes are high,” said Burish.

Jan. 24 vs. Regis conference (L 69-53)

Cadott finished out their week with a trip to Regis, but it wasn’t the outcome Hornets fans hoped for.

The Hornets went into halftime down by 12 and while they bounced back in the second, it wasn’t enough to overcome Regis’ larger lead. Cadott conceded the away loss, 69-53.

“We stuck in it the whole game,” said Burish. “[We were] down by 10, cut their lead to four points, three times. We just couldn’t get over the hump, but we didn’t give up, played hard all the way through.”

Poehls had a good night on scoring, recording 24 points. Mittermeyer was next on the leader board for Cadott, with 7 points, while Ritter and Steffes each had 6. Drilling ended with 4 points, Irwin and junior Cole Sopiarz had 3 points.

The Hornets are 2-9 overall and remain winless in the West Cloverbelt Conference, at 0-8.
