Cornell drops two more to conference opponents

The Cornell boys basketball team is still in search of their first win of the season, after a loss at home and on the road over the week.

Jan. 7 vs. Birchwood conference (L 79-34)

Cornell hosted Birchwood, but home court advantage wouldn’t be enough to keep their foe at bay. The Chiefs were limited to just 13 points in the second half and while they scored 21 in the second, Birchwood’s large lead was too much to overcome.

Cornell dropped the game, 79-34.

“We continue to work hard and fight,” said coach Marcus Leland. “We just have to find a way to limit our mistakes that turn into easy points for the other team.”

Leading the way for Cornell, was senior Caleb Balow, with 9 points and 7 rebounds. He was followed by junior Austin Bowe and senior Chayse Turchen, with 7 points each.

Freshman Dylan Bowe came next, with 6 points and 3 rebounds, while senior Tyler Harycki had 4 points and 3 rebounds. Junior Jake Sikora rounded things out with 1 point.

Jan. 10 vs. Winter conference (W 51-40)

It was a much closer game three days later, as the Chiefs took on Winter on the road. Cornell was only down by six at halftime.

“We played a really good second half, but ended up just not having enough in the tank to make the comeback in the game,” said Leland.

Cornell couldn’t overcome the deficit and went home with a 45-32 conference loss. The defeat makes the Chiefs 0-8 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.

“We have to finish more of the chances we get as we move forward,” said Leland.

Balow again led with 12 points and 5 rebounds, while junior Davis Harshman had 8 points and 10 steals. A. Bowe ended with 7 points and 5 steals, with D. Bowe adding 4 points and 3 steals.

Sikora again chipped in with 1 point.
