Hornets bring home win in double overtime thriller

The Cadott Hornets Girls Basketball picked up their first win of the season, in a back-and-forth battle Dec. 2, with a non-conference road game against the Independence Indees. The game required two extra periods of play to seal the deal, but it was the Hornets who produced the big plays during crunch time.

The Hornets routinely came up with the big plays, to force double overtime, with Cadott taking control in the end, to notch the first win of the season in a 46-40 thriller.

Cadott picked up the win with excellent team play, distributing the ball well, with the Hornets sharing the wealth, as Cadott finished with eight different players scoring.

The Hornets were led by Elly Eiler and Jada Kowalczyk, who each finished in double figures, with 10 points each. The Hornets got more big buckets from Meadow Barone, who scored 8 points, along with Hailey Wellner with 6 points, Mckenzie Prokupek with 5 points and Abby Eiler with 3 points.

The Hornets’ defense was suffocating, with just three players from Independence scoring points. Cadott held the Indees to just 14 points in the first half. Even more impressive, the Hornets overcame adversity and fouls, winning the game without Kowalcyzk down the stretch. But some hot shooting from deep, combined with a powerful interior presence on the glass, were the keys to the victory, said Hornets head coach Dave Hazuga.

“Jada fouled out with five minutes left in regulation,” said Hazuga. “We hit five threes in the second half [and] we outrebounded them on both sides. Our offensive rebounding was key to the game.”

Those offensive boards led to the biggest shot of the night. With the game still up for grabs late in second overtime, Autumn Bremness pulled down an offensive rebound. Bremness quickly got a shot off and her put-back was good, giving the Hornets the momentum they needed to ride out the victory.

The win improves the Hornet’s season record to 1-1, and gives them some well-earned momentum, as they head into the start of their regular season schedule.
