Tournament Champs

The Little Rose softball team took first place in the fast-pitch tournament by defeating the Country Air team. Little Rose finished second in the league to Sportsmen’s Bar, but came on strong in the tournament to win.

Hein Family Holds Reunion

The William Hein family held a reunion with relatives from as far away as California and Canada. The final head count showed 250 were present for the picnic at Wood County park near Marshfield. William Hein homesteaded his farm in what is now the Town of Eau Pleine, Marathon County, shortly after completing service in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. A grandson, Ray Hein, still works the original farm.

Scout News

The Boy Scouts met at St. Joseph’s Hall with 18 scouts and Scoutmaster Greg Weber present. At Camp Tesomas the Order of the Arrow was presented to Weber and Steve Stotmeister. Scout Lifeguard was presented to Jim Zuelke and Stotmeister. STRAFORD JOURNAL

Trail to stay open

The Stratford Village Board voted to allow snowmobilers access to West Larch Street to reach Telschow’s gas station at the beginning of the snowmobile season. Residents of West Larch Street had petitioned the board to close the trail along their street due to excessive speed and safety issues. The board agreed to increase enforcement of that area.

Bauman is national wrestling champ

Matt Bauman of Stratford recently competed in Fargo, ND, in the Cadet Greco National Championships. The tournament was for 15 and 16-year-old wrestlers. Bauman ended up bringing home the National Championship title in the 182.5 weight class.

Girls vying for Athens Fair queen

Five area girls are vying for the title of Athens Fair Queen this year. The selection of the queen is based on the sale of buttons promoting the 1975 Athens Fair. Contestants are Dawn Braun, Vanessa Gianoli, Cathy Henrich, Mary Ann Klimpke and Debbie Zenner.

Booster club started at Edgar High

The newly organized Edgar High School Wildcat Booster Club will hold a meeting to establish a constitution for the new organization. An organizational meeting was held in early August with 30 adults attending to promote high school extracurricular activities.

Area man gets award

Leonard Lechleitner, Edgar, has received the highest sales and service award presented by Midwest Breeders Cooperative. He becomes the fourth sales and service technician to be so honored.

Hail and high winds pummel area

The village of Poniatowski and the surrounding area was hit hard by a severe thunderstorm producing dime to golf ball size hail, lightning and winds in excess of 70 mph. The storm first hit in Ladysmith area and quickly continued on a diagonal path toward Mosinee. No confirmed tornadoes were reported but there was extensive damage to homes, downed trees and crop damage.

Scotch Creek bridge opens

The new and improved Scotch Creek bridge was opened for travel last week. The temporary bridge was also dismantled last week.

WSI Aides certifications

Katie Heindl and Jason Krautkramer have recently completed the Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Aide certification at the Marathon Swim Center. They have completed over 60 hours of volunteer work assisting swim instructors.
