Edgar’s varsity girls wrestling squad finished runners-up at the WIAA regional on Friday in Wautoma. Edgar scored 119 points behind regional team champion Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards with 153.5.

This is the first year the WIAA is offering high school girls their own regional and sectional competitions that include schools in all divisions. The top four girls in each regional advance to sectionals and the top two girls in each sectional qualify for state.

Edgar sophomore Blaynne Crawford, 38-5, took first place in the 120-pound weight class to advance to sectionals at 5 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 21, at Eau Claire North High School.

Wildcats wrestling teammates joining Crawford at sectionals are freshman Adeline Peterson, 26-12, who took second place at 100 pounds in the regional; freshman McKenzie Mueller, 4-4, who placed fourth at 126 pounds; senior Alyson Kolano, 17-18, who placed fourth at 152 pounds and freshman Vanessa Czech, 19-14, who placed fourth at 185 pounds.

Two Edgar girl wrestlers barely missed advancing from regionals to sectionals this season, but they both have plenty of time to keep improving their wrestling technique in the future. Freshman Ashley Krause, 11-10, took sixth place at 114 pounds and sophomore Alyssa Kolano, 16-17, placed sixth at 132 pounds.

Pair of Tigers advance

Stratford girls junior wrestler Hailey Fecker, 1-5, took third place in the 100pound weight class at Friday’s WIAA regional in Wautoma to qualify for sectionals. Fecker will be joined at sectionals by freshman teammate Wynn Schoenherr, 13-10, who placed fourth at 132 pounds at regionals. Tigers sophomore girls wrestler Dakota Knetter, 12-8, didn’t place at regionals so her season is over.

Putman on to sectionals

Marathon junior girls wrestler Lindsay Putnam, 2-16, took third place in the 107pound weight class at Friday’s WIAA sectional in Wautoma to advance to sectionals. She was the only Red Raiders girl wrestler who competed at regionals.

‘Jay girls at Merrill regional

Athens freshman Jendry Cruz-Perez, 624, didn’t place at Friday’s WIAA regional in Merrill. Bluejays junior Taylor Hein, 12-21, barely missed advancing to sectionals with a sixth-place finish in the 120-pound weight class at regionals.

HEIN OF ATHENS SECURES ANOTHER PIN AT REGIONALS- Athens junior Taylor Hein goes into the process of pinning Tanea Campeau of Osceola in the WIAA regional120-pound weight bracket on Friday in Merrill. Hein also pinned Katelyn Roessler of Clear Lake but they weren’t enough to advance to sectionals. She ended up taking sixth place in her weight class, only two spots away from a sectional berth.

VALIANT EFFORT FROM THE BLUEJAYS FRESHMAN- Athens freshman wrestler Jendry Cruz-Perez is shown eventually getting pinned by Ayda Miller of St. Croix Central in the WIAA regional 100-pound weight class on Friday in Merrill. Although Cruz-Perez didn’t advance to sectionals this season, she still has three years left to refine her technique so she can have more success in the future.
