Students Wanted for Twirling Class
Girls in the 3rd grade and older are wanted to join the Stratfordettes. Lessons for twirlers, guns and flags are $1.50 per week at the elementary gym every Monday. Some uniforms are available.
Loan Closet
The Stratford Homemakers announces the receipt of a new walker for the loan closet, donated by the Marathon Bridge club. The Homemakers recently bought a new wheelchair for the loan closet. Anyone needing use of these articles, please call Mrs. D. D. Hale or Mrs. J. Melbinger.
Drowning Claims Life
John K. Phelps, who had been employed at the Norman Graveen farm in the Town of Cleveland, drowned in the Fenwood Creek very close to its confluence with the Big Eau Pleine reservoir. Phelps, 21, and another employee at the Graveen farm, were searching for some stray cattle.

Happy with silver
Members of the Edgar High School varsity girls track team earned second place in Div. 3 at the WIAA state track meet held in La Crosse. They beat Iola-Scandinavia by one point and was only beaten by Fall Creek.
Marathon mill cash is missing
Approximately $700 in cash has been reported missing from a safe at the Customer One Feed Mill, according to the Marathon Police Department. Cheryl Mueller, one of the mill managers, discovered the missing money after finding the safe not locked as normal.
Athens honor guard
Honor guard squad members for the Athens High School summer marching program are Megan Ellenbecker, Lindsey Ellenbecker, April Rothenberger, Jennifer Loos, Holly Sekorski and Jessica Magnus. The alternate is Amber Von Loh.

Train Derailment in Marathon
Workers expected to have the railroad tracks cleared in Marathon 48 hours after an 18-car derailment there Saturday. Three young boys admitted to tampering with a switch, causing the accident. No one was hurt in the crash, but damage to the cars and track is estimated at $85,000.
Area folks warned
Chief of Police Gary Nehrbass at Athens has warned all residents to be on the lookout for a person, or group of persons, who are working in this area with a fraudulent home repair scheme. Apparently they offer to do sidewalk, roof, siding, or other home repairs and require a cash downpayment.
Edgar Bike Rodeo
Edgar Cub Scouts participated in a bike rodeo recently in the parking lot of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. Den Chief, Brent Jaeger was in charge of the course design. The Scouts had to know all the hand signals and work through an obstacle course.

Rock leads boys track team
Andrew Rock took first place in the 300m intermediate hurdles, the 200m dash, the 110m high hurdles and the long jump at the WIAA Track and Field championships in La Crosse. The boys’ team finished as the State runner-up.
Hirst will become oldest UW-Green Bay graduate When Roger Hirst, formerly of Stratford, participates in the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay commencement exercises in August, he will have completed a degree nearly 60 years in the making. The 77 year-old Hirst will become the oldest at Green Bay and one of the oldest graduates in the history of the UW system. Hirst graduated from Stratford in 1941 and didn't have the opportunity to enter college due to serving in World War II and then again for the Korean conflict.
2000 – Construction commences
Construction started on a $125,000 Edgar Fire Department project to build a 40 by 800 foot addition onto the Edgar fire station. Edgar Fire Chief Rick Schroeder wields a gold shovel to begin the project.
