Spencer girls notch 2 wins in their belt to start season

By Valorie Brecht The Spencer Rockets girls basketball team got out to a strong start this season by earning two non-conference wins at home last week, first defeating Prentice on Tuesday (49-43) and then defeating Northland Lutheran on Thursday.
Spencer jumped out to a lead to start the game against Northland Lutheran and never looked back. By the time the first half was halfway over, the Rockets were already up 15-3. By the end of the half, they had expanded that lead to 38-13. They slowed their pace in the second half, only putting up 25 additional points, but that was enough to earn the decisive 63-25 win.
Coach Kyle Davis was pleased with his team’s performance, especially how they kept the Northland Lutheran girls away from the basket.
“Our defense is going to be something we hang our hat on,” he said. “Also, on Tuesday we struggled with fouls, but we did better with that tonight.”
In their Thursday game, the girls did struggle a bit with turnovers and sloppy play. The coach said he planned to address that in practice.
“We are going to do more passing and ball handling drills during practice. And I’m hoping some of that was just first week nerves,” he said.
He is looking forward to seeing how the season develops. His team only lost three seniors from last year. Everyone on varsity this year has seen playing time on the varsity level. Most of them were strictly varsity last year and a few went back and forth between JV and varsity.
Season goals include “to always get better” and to earn more wins than the 6 they had last year.
“It’s a good start to the season,” said Davis. “We only won three home games in the last two years, so to win two right away to start the season is good to see.”
Starting for the Rockets on Thursday night were Alexa Weber, Alina Jackson, Hannah Schreiner, Carmen Krause and Autumn Davis. Weber and Davis are the team’s point guards.
The girls’ next game will be Tuesday, Dec. 3, at home versus Columbus Catholic at 7:15 p.m.
