Sonnentag continues to make history for Hornets

By Ginna Young

To begin a busy week for the Cadott girls wrestling program, the Hornets hosted a dual, Jan. 30, taking on McDonell-Elk Mound in the first bout. It was no contest and the Hornets took the win, 30-12.

They then went up against Neillsville-Loyal-Greenwood, claiming victory, 30-6.

“We also had the privilege to watch perhaps the last girl wrestle against the boys in the Cadott gymnasium, as Izsy Sonnentag won a nail biter in the Neillsville dual,” said coach Greg Sonnentag. “Next year, girls are not allowed to compete against both boys and girls.”

After that, it was off to Marshfield, in a “unique” tournament, with youth and high school competing at the same time.

Over the weekend, the team competed in Marshfield, for a unique tournament where the youth and high school girls competed simultaneously. The high school team placed fourth out of 32 teams, while the youth girls took second overall.

Individually, I. Sonnentag (114 pounds) placed second on the day, as did sophomore Tessa York (120) and senior Abigail Moss (145), while freshman Kaylee Stai (152) was fourth.

“It was a great tournament to help prepare us for the postseason and a fun display of girls wrestling, packing a gym full of girls wrestling for a day,” said G. Sonnentag.
