Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on Aug. 8 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Three games of Sheepshead were played. Dave Perrodin won first place and Rick Schaetzl came in second in the first game. Henry Faber won first and Norbert Lake came in second in the second game. The third game was won by Steve Klockziem, with Pat Frank coming in second.
Aaron Totzke earned the low score.
Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
VFW Post 8527
The monthly meeting of Athens VFW Post 8527 was held Aug. 7. The pledge of allegiance was said by the 16 members in attendance.
A letter was read from Cheryl Engel. She updated the group regarding a flag retirement ceremony that will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Veterans Park. The VFW and American Legion organizations are asked to participate along with the VFW Auxiliary and others.
Membership applicants to the VFW post were Carl Spiller, Korin and Casey Conner. All were unanimously approved by the membership.
A thank-you letter was read from one of the post’s scholarship recipient, Addison Lavicka.
Refreshments and snacks were had following the meeting. Attendance door prizes were given to Korin Conner, John Weiler, and Marv Reuter.
The next monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. at the fire hall back room. New members are always welcome.
College note
Emma Ford, a sophomore in the Carlson School of Management, was named to the 2024 spring semester dean’s list the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. To qualify for the list, a student must complete 12 or more letter-graded credits while attaining a 3.66 grade point average.
Farmers Market
The Athens Farmers Market is held every Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Memorial Park.
Bingo at St. Stephen
St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 424 N. Third Ave., Edgar, will host bingo in the church basement on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be served. If you need a ride or have questions, call Mark at 715-3485802 or Colleen at 715-571-8277.
Family Story Time
Parents and caregivers are invited to visit the Edgar Branch Library for Family Story Time on Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Children of all ages and their parents/guardians are welcome to this 30-minute program, which will include reading books, singing songs and enjoying other literaturebased activities.
Pokemon Club

Adults are invited to a presentation about artifacts from the World Wars on Monday, Aug. 26, from 56 p.m. at the Edgar Branch Library. The Marathon County Historical Society's Anna Chilsen Straub will lead this program on artifacts they've collected over the years from veterans who served during world wars of the 20th Century. Adults can learn about fall lawn care during a free class on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., at the Marathon City Branch Library. Janell Wehr, horticulture educator for Extension Marathon County, will cover choosing the right species for over seeding or bee lawns, and will discuss best practices around mowing, aeration, fertilizers, and herbicides.
