Lake Holcombe takes opportunity to improve
By Ginna Young
In their first time on the court this season, the Lake Holcombe volleyball program was on the road to Boyceville, for a quad against some tough teams.
Aug. 29 vs. Spring Valley (L 0-2)
The Chieftains faced off first with Spring Valley, but dropped the sets, 25-12 and 25-18.
Aug. 29 vs. South Shore (L 1-2)
They then had a match with South Shore, claiming the first set, 25-23, but falling in the next two sets, 25-13 and 15-7.
Aug. 29 vs. Boyceville (L 0-2)
Finally, Lake Holcombe played Boyceville, dropping both sets, 25-10 and 25-11.
“We had great leadership from returning varsity players, Chloe Lee (senior), Alexia Hoffner (junior) and Payton Birkenholz (sophomore),” said coach Beth Meddaugh. “Hoffner and newcomer Chloe Irwin (sophomore) did a great job stepping up to play in positions that they had not previously played.”
Leading on the night, in digs, was Irwin, with 18, followed by Birkenholz, with 13. Irwin also had 14 kills, while Birkenholz and freshman Breanna Frear each had 10. Lee ended with 31 assists.
“It was great to see the players working as a team,” said Meddaugh. “We had built fantastic momentum, when the inclement weather stopped play for some time. After we were able to resume play, we were not able to regain that momentum. There were a lot of great things going on, but this tournament is always a good opportunity to help determine what areas we need to focus more on, as well.”
