RIB LAKE TRACK & FIELD

The Redmen finally got their outdoor season started Friday after cancellations at Edgar and Stanley-Boyd and both sides earned third-place team finishes in Phillips.

The girls scored 95.3 points to comfortably finish ahead of Prentice (51), Butternut (29), Winter (23.5) and Mellen (20) while trailing Marawood rivals Phillips (241) and Chequamegon (134.2). Individually, it was a big day for Olivia Lopez, who won three individual events and helped the 800-meter relay team pick up a win as well.

That team of Lopez, Emma Tlusty, Madison Grzanna and Isabelle Gumz finished in 2:02.18 to edge Phillips by 1.33 seconds, while Chequamegon took third in 2:07.04. That was the only relay race Rib Lake entered.

Lopez ran the 200-meter dash in 28.26 seconds to beat Sarah Knaack of Phillips by 0.6 seconds, while Tlusty picked up five fourth-place points at 30.89 seconds, 0.52 seconds behind Jessica Morrone of Phillips. Lopez went 31 feet, 9.75 inches to win the triple jump by more than 2 feet over Solita Kaster of Phillips and she went 13-7.25 in the long jump to beat Morrone by 4.75 inches.

Rib Lake got solid scoring in two other field events. Camryn Glenzer, Hadassah Nelson, Gumz and Tlusty were all part of a five-way tie for second place in the high jump competition. They cleared the bar at 4-2, 2 inches behind winner Mataya Eckert of Phillips. Grzanna hit 4 feet to tie for seventh. In the shot put, Gumz placed third at a season-best 27.3.5, while Tessa Krause took fifth at 24-0.5, Grace Artz was seventh at 21-7.5 and Molly Schmittfranz got a point by taking eighth at 21-0.5. Ziarra Schrader was 11th at 1711 and Katie Heiser was 15th at 17-9.

Schmittfranz got three more points with a sixth-place throw of 62 feet in the discus. Artz was 3 inches away from scoring while taking ninth at 55-6, Schrader was 10th at 55-2, Krause was 16th at 40-11 and Heiser was 17th at 40-1.

Tlusty sprinted to a solid third-place finish in the 100-meter dash at 14.16 seconds, 0.33 seconds behind winner Caitlynn BeBeau of Butternut and 0.13 seconds behind Mellen’s Kylee Schutte. Nelson (15.12) was 13th, Camryn Glenzer (15.51) was 16th and Coralee Glenzer (16.58) was 18th. Anna Martin scored six points with sixth-place finishes in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs with times of 3:17.99 and 7:22.14.

Theo Robisch led the boys with two wins in the jumps and the 3,200-meter relay team also got a win in Friday’s meet.

Robisch easily won the triple jump with a distance of 37-2.5, almost 3.5 feet better than runner-up Dominick Mabie of Phillips. Gus Zuleger got three sixth-place points at 30-9. Robisch tied Prentice’s Logan Geiger for first place in the high jump by clearing 5-6. Freshman Jed Henderson made his debut and cleared 5-2 to take third, while Zuleger tied for fifth at 4-10. Zuleger added an eighthplace point in the long jump at 14-4.25, while Robisch was 10th at 13-0.25.

Dominick Classen, Ryan Buehler, Ben Petersen and Donovan Sutherland teamed up for the 3,200-meter relay win with a time of 9:06.63 that beat Phillips by 5.62 seconds, while Chequamegon was a distant third at 9:48.55.

The 800-meter run was another key event for Rib Lake. Sutherland was third in 2:14.88, Jack Regier was fourth in 2:20.03, Buehler was sixth at 2:22.23 and Elijah Scott got the eighth-place point at 2:29.79. Chequamegon’s Isaiah Deitz won in 2:03.9. Buehler added a fifth-place time of 5:14.44 in the 1,600-meter run while Scott was sixth in 5:20.8. Connor Highfill was 12th for the Redmen at 6:27.05 and was seventh in the 3,200-meter run at 13:48.22.

Petersen placed seventh in the 200-meter dash at 27.11 seconds, and Henderson and Zuleger tied for 14th at 30.09 seconds. Schmittfranz was ninth in the 100-meter dash at 13.15 seconds, Xavier Johnson (14.42) was 15th and Kaedyn Kopelke (14.43) was 16th. Zuleger took 10th in the 400-meter dash at 1:09.31.

Kopelke scored twice in the throws. He was fourth in his first discus competition of the spring with a throw of 93-11. Johnson (61-9) and Schmittfranz (59-3) were 14th and 15th. Kopelke placed seventh in the shot put at 30-3, while Schmittfranz (28-7.5), Henderson (27-11) and Johnson (26-2.5) were 10th, 11th and 13th. Chequamegon’s Kade Mckendry (41-3) won the shot put and AJ Morgan won the discus (113 feet).

Phillips snuck past Chequamegon 257246.5 to win the meet, while Rib Lake’s 75.5 points beat Prentice (44), Butternut (12) and Mellen (0).

Unfortunately, two more attempts to get meets in early this week failed due to more lousy spring weather. Meets Monday at Stratford and Tuesday at Wittenberg- Birnamwood were canceled. The forecast is looking more promising for Friday’s Northwoods Quad in Rib Lake, which features Chequamegon, Phillips and Prentice and starts at 4:30 p.m. Rib Lake will be at Chequamegon on Monday.
