A representative of Canadian mining company Green Light Metals has requested a private meeting with Marathon County Board of Supervisors chairman Kurt Gibbs and Environmental Resources Committee chairman Jacob Lagenhahn, it was announced at last week Tuesday’s committee meeting. Langenhahn said he planned to attend the meeting not as a representative of the committee, the county’s metallic mining committee or the county board, but simply to exchange information.

Conservation, Planning and Zoning director Laurie Miskimins confirmed that the company had requested a metallic mining application for the Reef deposit, located near the Dells of the Eau Claire in the town of Easton. The deposit contains gold.

Langenhahn said the county adopted a metallic mining ordinance four years ago that spells out procedures to license a metallic mine. At that time, the Reef deposit was owned by Aquilla Resources, now a subsidiary of a Chinese state-owned company Baosteel Resources. Langenhahn promised to bring committee members up to speed on the ordinance at its May meeting.

Committee member Dave Oberbeck, a Wausau supervisor, said he had been contacted by a constituent concerned about the environmental impact of any Reef deposit mine.
