From past files of The Star News 10 Years Ago May 1, 2014 Scharrschmidt left his mark on Medford

William “Bill” Paul Scharrschmidt devoted a life to growth in Medford.

Scharrschmidt, 92, died on April 28 at the Neenah home where he resided in recent years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 17, at Community United Church of Christ in Medford, with Rev. Ken Dix officiating.

Scharrschmidt led Time Federal Savings Bank for many years, and the GI loans the financial institution handled built thousands of homes and small businesses in this community and throughout northcentral Wisconsin. Scharrschmidt was an early promoter of the Medford Economic Development Foundation and the support the organization gave to industry helped make the city an economic powerhouse in the region.

May 5, 1999 Ground broken Friday for new Black River Industries facility 25 Years Ago Groundbreaking ceremonies were held last Friday for a new 30,000 square foot building for Black River Industries (BRI) in Medford. BRI is an affiliate of Catholic Charities Bureau of Superior and provides vocational and residential support for people with disabilities.

The new masonry structure is being built on Jensen Drive in Industrial Park No. 2, just west of the National Guard Armory on the site where Huotari Construction Company is now located.

50 Years Ago May 2, 1974 Centennial Ties In With City’s Opportunity Sale

The Medford Centennial executive committee has announce a stepped up phase of “dressup” days in conjunction with Medford “Opportunity Days” today, Thursday, through Saturday. The sales promotion is being sponsored by the Medford Area Chamber of Commerce.

May 5, 1949 Hurd Millwork Plant Suffers Heavy Loss in Sunday Fire 75 Years Ago For the second time in a period of 13 years the plant of the Hurd Millwork Corp., suffered a severe fire loss when fire broke out at 1:45 Sunday afternoon in the finishing room and created damage that has been estimated in excess of $300,000 by company officials. The previous fire occurred on Sunday June 28, 1936.

Harry M. Hurd, president and general manager of the corporation, stated this week that the plant would be rebuilt in Medford.

May 8, 1924 Office of County Nurse Abolished This Morning 100 Years Ago The office of Taylor county nurse was abolished this morning by vote of the county board, on resolution passed by the board after its presentation with the signatures of a large number of members. Vote was oral, with few members voting to retain the nurse.
