A thens Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on April 25 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Three games of Sheepshead were played. Andy Hoef won first place and Butch Boris came in second in the first game. Norbert Lake won first and Tom Ellenbecker came in second in the second game. In the third game, Rick Schaetzl came in first and Henry Faber finished second.
Low score went to Wil Strack.
Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
Family Story Time
Bring your entire family to Story Time at the new Alfred Street location on Monday, May 6, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us in Athens for this 30-minute program. Staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literature-based activities.
Book club
The Athens Book Club will meet at the Athens Branch Library on Tuesday, May 14, at 2 p.m. to discuss “A Flicker in the Dark” by Stacy Willingham. Incidents 20 years apart in which girls go missing rattles a Louisiana woman. Call 715-257-729 for more information.
Board game night
All ages are welcome at a monthly board game night at the Athens Branch Library, 203 Alfred St. Games will be available to choose from and participants are welcome to bring in their own games to play. The next sessions will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m on Thursday, May 16. This event is free and open to the public with no registration required. For more information, call 715-257-7292.
E dgar Book club
The Edgar Book Club will meet on Tuesday, May 14 at noon to discuss “Still Alice” by Lisa Genova, which tells the story of a Harvard professor who grapples with her diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Call 715-352-3155 for more information.
Family Story Time
Children of all ages and their parents and caregivers are invited to the Edgar Branch Library on the first and third Tuesday of the month for Family Story Time. Enjoy learning with all of your children through stories, songs and other literature-based activities in this 30-minute program. The next Family Story Time will be Tuesday, May 7, from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
Board & card games

M arathon Book club
The Marathon City Book Club will meet on Monday, May 13, at 5:45 p.m. at the Marathon Branch Library to discuss “The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio” by Terry Ryan. The novel is about a mom in the 1950s who enters a variety of contests to keep her family afloat financially. New members are always welcome; stop at the library to pick up your copy. Lions Club River Float
The Marathon Lions Club will host their Third Annual River Float on Saturday, June 8. Online registration runs from May 1-26. Visit Marathon Lions Club #10539 Facebook page for the link to register. Once online registration closes, registration will only be available on the day of the float, which is June 8, from 9 a.m. to noon in Rib Falls.
Attendees will drop their canoes, kayaks or inner tubes off in Rib Falls at the check-in site and then proceed to Lions Park in Marathon where transportation will be provided back to Rib Falls. The float begins at 10 a.m. with the last drop off at 1 p.m.
Food will be provided for all registered participants at Arrow Tap in Marathon from noon to 4:30 p.m. Send any questions by message via Facebook page.
S tratford Stratford High School Art Show
The Stratford High School Art Show will be held from Sunday, May 5, to Tuesday, May 7, on the high school stage. An opening reception will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on May 5. The artwork is open to the public from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. on May 6 and 7. Guests are asked to check in at the front office. Over 300 works by students in ninth through 12th grade will be on display. Awards will given out for People’s Choice, Art Honorarium, Staff Pick and Student Pick, with winners announced on Facebook on May 8.
Stratford YA Book Club
The Stratford Young Adult Book Club will meet on Thursday, May 9 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss “The Book Thief” by Marcus Zusak. Set in 1939 Nazi Germany, this beloved novel is about the ability of books to feed the soul even in the darkest of times. Those interested can join in person or virtually.
