THENS MCPL Book Club

Join readers and Athens library staff to discuss “The Paris Apartment” by Lucy Foley on October 10, 2 p.m.

MCPL Story Time

Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Athens library branch for these 30-minute programs. There will be reading, singing and other literature-based activities on Mondays, Oct. 9, 16, 23 and 30, 10:30-11 a.m.

Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on September 28 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead were played. Butch Boris won the first game and Alvira Henrichs took second place.

Steve Klockziem won the second game and Tom Ellenbecker took second. Low score went to Henry Faber.

Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Farmers Market

The Athens Farmers Market will be held each Tuesday, 4-7 p.m., at Athens Memorial Park.

DGAR MCPL Book Club

New members are always welcome to join in the discussion. This month’s event will be held on October 10, 12 p.m., where attendees will discuss “Practical Magic” by Alice Hoffman.

Senior citizen dinner

The Edgar Lions Club will be sponsoring a complimentary chicken dinner for Edgar senior citizens on October 12.

All meals will be in carryout containers and should be picked up between 5-6 p.m. at the Edgar Fire Station. To order a meal, call Marie at 715-573-5616 or Kathy at 715721-6520 until October 10.

Join Marathon library staff and other readers for this month’s gathering on October 9, 5:45 p.m., to discuss “Mexican Gothic” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.

Storytimes will be on Thursdays, Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26, 10:30-11 a.m.

Farmers market

The Marathon City Farmers Market will run every Thursday from 2-6 p.m. until October 26. The market is located in downtown Marathon at 400 Main St.

Join other literary enthusiasts and Stratford library staff for a discussion of “Marmee” by Sarah Miller at 1 p.m. on October 18.

OUNTY MAREA minutes

The September 18 Marshfield Area Retired Educators Association meeting was called to order by President Doreen Schultz. Following the Pledge to the Flag the August minutes were approved and treasurer’s report placed on file.

Committee Reports Community Action: The meeting’s donations go to Trinity Food Pantry in Unity.

Health: Kathleen Hasenohrl reminded members to get their fall vaccines.

Legislative: Bruce Stevens reported on task forces on artificial intelligence, human trafficking and school safety taking place.

Membership: Trina Tiffany will give an update at the October meeting on the new State WREA plan.

Pension: Carol Subera gave an update and possible changes. Information on Social Security changes will be officially announced in October for 2024.

Public Relations: Carol Ballerstein read a thank you note from the Stratford Food Pantry followed by a thank you note from August speaker Judy Foust.

Scholarship: Ruby Pinter reported on 2023 scholarships paid out. Volunteer Hours: Cindee Loos collected volunteer sheets. Sheets not collected need to be sent to her.

WREA Foundation: Dorothy Dietsche circulated the donation box which wil be sent to state.

Old/New Business Thanks were extended to Sally Lucas for meeting greeter and Anne Teska for meeting treats.

Cindee Loos was elected to serve as secretary and will be installed in October.

State convention in Green Bay to be September 25-27.

September birthday song was sung.

Members shared what they would have done if they had not become a teacher.

October program speaker is Myra Swistom from Big Brothers, Big Sisters Organization.

October question of the month: What is your motto?

Meeting adjourned to speaker Gary Beastrom, who has been running the Athens Fair for 56 years. He explained the Athens Fair is 119 years old, is a district fair and receives $5,000 financial aid. Individual memberships are also sold. It is estimated 10,000-15,000 attend the fair enjoying the exhibits, the animals, fireworks, rides and the parade. Planning is a year long process. Beastrom and his wife have received many awards for their work and leadership with the Athens Fair. Beastrom stated that local support is paramount in the success of the fair.
