Highground invites female vets to 2 summer retreats
Registration is open for The Highground’s 2024 Female Veterans Retreats. The Female Veterans Ice Age Trail Hike is scheduled for May 30–June 2 and The Highground-based Female Veterans Retreat will take place June 21–23.
Veterans can sign up for both retreats and are encouraged to share the event information with other female veterans.
The Ice Age Trail Hike will include 5-8 miles of hiking on rolling/hilly terrain along the Ice Age Trail in the Holcombe area. The group will return to overnight individual tent camping and workshops on outdoor skills and post-traumatic stress (PTS)/military sexual trauma (MST) management at a rural town hall property. The retreat will also include kayaking and canoeing.
The coordinating staff for this retreat, Pete Kitzhaber and members of the Ice Age Trail Alliance, are working on preparations, which include the detailed itinerary, an equipment list and physical conditioning advice.
The Highground-based Female Veterans Retreat will include activities and workshops at the park and local areas. Vietnam veteran nurse Sarah Blum will lead PTS and MST recovery workshops and talking circles. As plans are finalized, more information about this retreat will be available on The Highground's website (thehighground. us) and sent personally to all female veterans who are interested in attending.
Note: The Highground does not cover the cost of transportation to and from these retreats. Once veterans are at the retreats, The Highground will take care of food, lodging, supplies, etc., including basic camping equipment for the Ice Age Trail Hike.
Registration is required for both retreats (early registration and a firm commitment is required for the Ice Age Trail Hike) and there is a $30 registration fee, which will be refunded to the veterans when they arrive. Female veterans who are interested in attending the retreats are encouraged to email Theresa at museum@thehighground.org as soon as possible. Email is the best way to connect. Those who don’t have email can call 715-743-4224.
